Radio Frequency (RF) Water Surface Tension reduction by SKILLICORN Technologies
How Radio Frequency (RF) Water Surface Tension reduction creates synergies and adds value to advanced, innovative wastewater treatment
There is growing recognition that lowering the strength of hydrogen bonds in water can result in smaller water molecule clusters and lower water surface tension. Effects are noticeable in passage of water through animal and plant membranes and pipes, percolation through soils and artificial membranes, scale formation, dissolved oxygen retention and pH, among other effects. Approaches to reducing hydrogen bond strength in water have been well reported, and include: high speed centrifugation, magnetization, pumped swirling, ultra high voltage electrical “sparking,” microwave irradiation and radio frequency irradiation. Interest is now focused on frequency modulation and pulsing as approaches to increasing longevity of effects and reducing costs.
STL’s interest in lowering water surface tension has been internal to STL Systems, but the company is also electing to make STL RF irradiation systems available to 3rd party customers. Frequency modulation and pulsing can be tailored to specific requirements such as fermentation and crop production on one hand and passage through RO membranes and long distance transmission of water through pipes on another.

BENEFITS OF STL Radio Frequency (RF) Water Surface Tension reduction
- Lower the surface tension of SWRO (sea water reverse osmosis) influent streams using the STL RF (radio frequency) irradiation process – cutting RO power requirements for equivalent flows by up to 50% in the process.
- Lower the surface tension of SWRO desalinated permeate streams using STL RF irradiation process – cutting power requirements by up to 50% for pumping equivalent flows over long distances through pipes and valves.
- STL Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Systems, as well as STL Phyto-Desalination Systems (see relevant recommendation documents) all employ use of relatively inexpensive RF pretreatment in a number ofcircumstances. This lowers the cost of membranes (lower surface area required for same volume throughput) and the pumping necessary to push water through them. Low surface tension water also grows plants (notably Lemnaceae) and fish more quickly. With conventional SWRO STL RF Pre-Treatment can cut total costs per M3 of desalinated water by almost 50%. This technology can be used independently of complete STL system installations and spun off commercially as a global business entity. In the future, all RO applications will conceivably require STL RF pre-treatment.
